I’ve recently been challenged by this question.  Should we be focusing on getting more efficient?  Or perhaps we should also be focused on being more effective?  What’s the difference, I hear you ask?  If efficiency is doing this right, then effectiveness is doing the right things.

As the owner of a Real Estate agency, what does this really mean for you?

When you start managing your time better it’s worthwhile asking yourself two questions:

  1. Am I the BEST and ONLY person who can do this? This is a question about Effectiveness.  If the answer is no, then it’s time to consider passing the task on to someone else.  Your role as the business owner is to be doing the things that ONLY you are good at, and outsourcing or assigning the other tasks to someone else (who probably does them better than you anyway!)
  2. Is this the quickest/most efficient way of doing this? This is a question about Efficiency.  Once you establish that you are the best and only person to do the task, then it’s time to examine the best way possible to complete this task.  This mean you need to block out uninterrupted time to complete the task, add some automation and software to the task and just make sure that you’re performing the task the most efficient way.

Asking myself these questions has been challenging (largely because I love focussing on efficiency, and it’s hard for me to let go of control at times), but I’m learning to trust my team more and achieve more in my business as a result of this.
